Kurt Cobain wrote the song “Polly” after reading this newspaper article. Nirvana would later end up playing benefit shows to help rape victims, the “Rock Against Rape” concert in 1993 being one example, which helped raise money for a women’s self-defense organization. In the liner notes of “Incesticide”, Cobain wrote: “Last year, a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sang the lyrics to our song ‘Polly.’ I have a hard time carrying on knowing there are plankton like that in our audience. Sorry to be so anally P.C. but that’s the way I feel.”
“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth. And it happens every few minutes, the problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.” - Kurt Cobain.

“You do learn things and one of them is that happiness has nothing to do with validation from other people, the important thing is being happy with yourself … finding something that is important to you and sticking with it no matter what anyone says. The truth is you’ve got to really be tough because there are all kinds of forces that are always trying to get you to do things their way … trying to tell you that you are throwing your life away if you don’t follow their advice.” - Kurt Cobain.
